“Doctor Who”‘s Ncuti Gatwa Brings Afrofuturism to the BAFTA Red Carpet

0

Following an outpouring of support from friends and fans for becoming the next “Doctor Who”, Ncuti Gatwa arrived at the 2022 BAFTA TV awards in a sleek, co-ordinated set that was fit for the “Whoniverse”. Designed by Nigerian luxury brand Orange Culture, Gatwa’s head-to-toe black outfit was a refreshing take on Afrofuturism.

Although Gatwa has great red carpet style, his BAFTAs look was a welcomed departure from the tailored suits and luxe silk shirts of his “Sex Education” era. Designed by 2014/2015 LVMH prize nominee Orange Culture, Gatwa’s look featured a black tunic with seamless tailoring, contrasting silk cuffs, a dynamic “peek-a-boo” keyhole neckline, and a peakcock-inspired hemline. The rigid structure of the tunic was balanced out by the fluid movement of the leather, fringed details, loose-fitting “blossom” trousers, and cosy, leather slide sandals. Gatwa’s stylist, London-born California-based Felicity Kay, completed the look with chunky, silver rings by Bleue Burnham, and freshly dyed blond hair.

Gatwa’s Orange Culture outfit is from the brand’s spring/summer 2022 collection “Peakcock Riot”, which is inspired by “inclusion and the quest for dignity as a collective human agenda”, the designer explained on Instagram. Orange Culture is certainly an emerging designer to watch, with a look from OC’s autumn/winter 2020 collection currently being featured in the “Fashioning Masculinities” exhibition at London’s Victoria and Albert museum.

Keep reading for every angle of Ncuti Gatwa’s first red carpet appearance as the new “Doctor Who”, alongside friends Nicola Coughlan and Aimee Lou Wood.
